Pre-hospital blood transfusions can be a life-saving intervention for trauma victims experiencing severe bleeding. By replacing lost blood volume and red blood cells early, they can help combat hemorrhagic shock, a major cause of death in these situations. This can improve the patient’s physiological state before reaching the hospital, potentially leading to better survival rates and overall outcomes.

Why do we not already have Blood on Board?

While the North West Pre-hospital Critical Care Charity’s team possesses the expertise and equipment to deliver life-saving blood transfusions at the scene, incorporating blood into our standard operating procedures requires a significant ongoing financial commitment. Blood itself is a precious resource, and maintaining a fresh supply on board our vehicles comes at a high cost. A box of blood would cost the charity £500 for each administration.

Unfortunately, with their current resources, the charity simply can’t afford to take on this additional expense. However, our dedication to improving patient outcomes means we’re always actively seeking new supporters. With an increase in donations, we hope to one day implement a “Blood on Board” programme, further enhancing our ability to provide additional care in those crucial moments before reaching the hospital.
